ABOUT WISCOMBE

A number of drivers believe that Wiscombe Park is one of, if not the, most challenging hills in the national championship. Once you have witnessed the drivers fighting their machines through the camber changes of The Esses and then rounding the hairpins at Sawbench and Martini it becomes obvious that this is a ‘drivers’ hill. A demanding drivers hill.

During the course of a season a diverse selection of motor cars and motor cycles can be seen at this beautiful venue which nestles in a picturesque south Devon valley. Whether it is a regional championship event or the national championships, whether the competitors are on two, three or four wheels, whether the machinery is modern, classic or vintage there is always interest and spectacle at Wiscombe.

ON THE WRIGHT TRACK

JONATHAN WRIGHT ADDS CHAMPIONSHIP TO PREVIOUS YOUNG DRIVER AWARD

Despite a inclement evening in November many drivers attended the awards presentation of the Bridge Tyres & Wheels Wiscombe Park Hill Climb Championship. The main purpose of the evening was to celebrate the successes of the trophy winners and to crown the eighth outright champion. During the history of the championship we have seen a number of closely fought campaigns with the battle going down to the wire during the Five Clubs weekend in September.

However, the 2009 season yielded a ‘photo finish’ with Exeter driver Bob Rouse amassing a points haul of 56.11 points in his rapid Ford Fiesta. The construction project manager’s points total was matched by Golf GTi driver Jonathan Wright. The Wellington driver, who has previously taken the Young Driver of the Year Award at Wiscombe Park claims the 2009 title, the Bridge Tyres and Wheels Trophy and £300 by virtue of scoring more points in the first round of the championship back in April at the Woolbridge Motor Club meeting. Such a close finish does however show that if a driver has intentions with regard to posting a good performance, or even winning the series, it is critical to optimise your performances from the word go leaving nothing to chance at the end of the challenge. Hindsight though is a wonderful thing.

The season long championship for the motorcycle brigade was won by Alan Jolley on his rapid KTM. Alan received the impressive Sir Nicholas Williamson Trophy after a season at Wiscombe which comprised of four events.

The Young Driver Award for 2009 was won by Weymouth driver Geoff Blake who has campaigned a 1.8 litre Zetec engine Westfield SEi with his father Graham. Blake junior claimed class victories during the year and now heads towards 2010 with a new more powerful mount. Can Geoff follow Jonathan Wright’s footsteps and go on to win the championship outright?

LONG LEGGED BLONDE TRIES JEDI RACER FOR SIZE

It is a Saturday morning in August at the centre of Taunton. And the business of the day is to promote the early autumn meetings at Wiscombe Park. The cars forming the display are all set, i.e. the Jedi of Andy Potter and the Subaru of Mike Potter. Personnel are in place and ‘on message’ when we observe much to our amazement a lady on stilts making her way towards us.

It transpires that she is further along the street as part of the Saturday market and her purpose, just like our own, publicity.

Being game for a laugh it did not take much persuasion for the ‘lanky lady’ to try a racing car for size!! As you can see the ‘heel and toe’ driving technique could prove difficult, almost as problematical as it was to return her to the vertical state.

If nothing else it entertained Taunton’s shoppers for a while.

WISCOMBE PARK

50 YEARS - THE STORY SO FAR

Having celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Wiscombe Park last year it is now appropriate to commemorate such an occasion with the publication of a brief history of the venue, the personalities and the machines which have made Wiscombe what it is today. The publication, which has been compiled by Colin Rolls and produced by Andrew Forsyth, will be available at all Wiscombe meetings this season or by mail order at £6.00 including postage and packing.
