WHAT WISCOMBE IS ABOUT

A number of drivers believe that Wiscombe Park is one of, if not the, most challenging hills in the national championship. Once you have witnessed the drivers fighting their machines through the camber changes of The Esses and then rounding the hairpins at Sawbench and Martini it becomes obvious that this is a ‘drivers’ hill. A demanding drivers hill.

During the course of a season a diverse selection of motor cars and motor cycles can be seen at this beautiful venue which nestles in a picturesque south Devon valley. Whether it is a regional championship event or the national championships, whether the competitors are on two, three or four wheels, whether the machinery is modern, classic or vintage there is always interest and spectacle at Wiscombe.

PADDOCK IMPROVEMENTS

The winter programme of repairs and improvements is nearing completion. Some of the work is not immediately obvious  but others are. Including new drains in the lower Esses and an extended track across the top of the main paddock. The later should facilitate the easier, and therefore quicker, return of cars to their paddock positions.

Extensive work at the paddock exit has encompassed excavation and the construction of new foundations to aid drainage.

Additionally a heavy duty plastic mesh has been inserted to protect the surface and reduce the likelihood of mud. This area has recently been re-seeded and should be operational for the Woolbridge meetings in April.

Improvements and the replacement of a bridge within the spectator enclosure at The Esses has also been achieved.

Woolbridge at Wiscombe

500 Owners Association – May 10th

Roger Cock put together a neat and rapid first climb on the Sunday of Woolbridge Motor Club’s weekend of Wiscombe hillclimbs to claim victory. The 40.03 second ascent of the 915 metre course could not be matched by fellow Pilbeam pilots John Forsyth and Dave Gardner. Then the rains arrived guaranteeing the Yeovil builder the Mark Salter Memorial Trophy.

The previous day Geoff Guille was the only competitor to achieve a sub 39 second climb with a time of 38.86 with his OMS CF04. The two drivers who did scorea 39 second run were John Forsyth who claimed the class honours and Rod Thorne who hussled his sports car Pilbeam MP43 to the top of the course in a class record time of 39.98.

Entries are in for the next Wiscombe meeting and a diverse entry it most certainly is. From Allard to Pilbeam. From Austin Seven specials to ERAs. As has become the tradition this meeting benefits from a number of drivers who will be acclimatising themselves to their machines and the course in preparation for the Vintage meeting the following day.

Terry Crabb and David Morris will campaign their ERAs there is a great diversity of interest such as Anthony Howat and his 1927 Hispano Delage complete with a twenty seven litre engine. Within the historic racing car class there will be such delights Coopers, a Hornet, Staride, Smith and a Cousy. An ideal opportunity to see historic machinery in action at Wiscombe Park
